2012 New Year countdown

2012 New Year countdown celebration held nationwide


BANGKOK, Dec 31 - New Year countdown events will be held nationwide to ring in 2012, with fireworks, concerts, activities and other light and sound spectacles provided to the public.
In the Thai capital, the main stage is at CentralWorld Square and is called 'Bangkok Countdown Smile Up 2012 @ CentralWorld', starting from Saturday through on Sunday.
Some 2,000 police officers were deployed to ensure the safety of partygoers, as the roads in front of and around the venue were closed. 
More than 20,000 fireworks would be lit to celebrate the New Year. It was expected more than 250,000 revellers would attend this event.
About 160 km southeast of Bangkok, the 'Grand Pattaya Countdown 2012' with the theme "Happiness You Can Imagine" is being held at South Pattaya's Bali Hai Pier in the eastern province of Chonburi, starting from Dec 25.
In northern Thailand, 'Chiang Mai Countdown 2012' under a wonderland theme is organised from Dec 29-Jan 1 at Thapae Gate in the provincial seat, with the world's 7 wonders in miniature on display, while another event in nearby Chiang Rai is being held in the provincial seat from at the Clock Tower on Banpa Prakan Rd.
In the northeast, 'Khon Kaen Countdown 2012: Sparkling Fantasy World' has been the celebration since Thursday at Khon Kaen City Gate on Sri Chan Rd, whereas another event is being held in Mukdahan at the scenic point under the second Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge, linking the Thai province to Savannakhet in Laos.
In the country's south, a countdown in the resort province of Prachuap Khiri Khan has been organised at Hua Hin Market Village from . Other events include the 'Colorful Phuket Countdown 2012', starting from Dec 29 at Sanam Chai in Phuket's provincial seat, and the 'Night Paradise Hat Yai Countdown 2012', held Friday and Saturday at the town centre of Songkhla province's Hat Yai district.
Meanwhile, prayer sessions over the new year are being held at temples countrywide, including the capital's Sanam Luang ceremonial ground, which was set up for Buddhists to opt for another way to celebrate the New Year and to boost moral after the flood crisis.
This year, 33,000 temples, 1,000 dhamma retreats all over the country and 79 temples abroad are joining in a prayer countdown. All sites are also devote all good merit to His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej for his 84th birthday anniversary.
