Water shortages hit 12 provinces

More than 7,000 villages in 12 provinces have been hit by water shortages since Oct 1, officials have reported.

Bangkok cops on flood alert

Police are on alert for the possibility of sudden flooding in 21 spots in Bangkok, following the latest weather forecast of heavy downpours in the capital until the end of this weekend.

The National Water and Flood Management Policy Committee reported yesterday that many areas in Bangkok will continue to see heavy rain until Sunday.

The Meteorological Department said people in the capital, particularly in low-lying areas, might experience some flooding if rainfall exceeds drainage capacity.

Expert urges channel to drain water from Chao Phraya River

A water expert has called on the government to build another major flood-diversion channel as quickly as possible in order to drain a large amount of water from the Chao Phraya River into the sea. 

The government should spend about Bt200 billion to build a 258-kilometre-long, 160-metre-wide channel that would pass through Chai Nat, Lop Buri, Saraburi, Nakhon Nayok and Samut Prakan provinces, Thailand Water Resources Association (TWRA) president Apichart Anukulamphai said yesterday. 

The project is aimed at lowering the amount of run-off from the Chao Phraya itself and reducing the impact of flooding in the lower Chao Phraya region. 

A new project to cope with natural disasters

The Ministry of Information and Communication Technology has launched a new project to cope with possible natural disasters. The National Disaster Warning Center has been assigned to serve as the core agency in implementing the project.

Theo Reuters, hàng ngàn người Thái Lan đã phải rời bỏ nhà cửa ở miền bắc Thái Lan để tránh lụt, sau khi mưa lớn khiến nước sông Yom - con sông lớn ở miền bắc - dâng cao hồi đầu tháng 9-2012, ở một số thành phố nước ngập tới hàng mét. Đến nay, bốn người đã thiệt mạng.

Chính quyền Thái Lan hôm qua cảnh báo tình trạng lũ lớn ở các tỉnh miền bắc và có thể miền trung nước này, trong đó có thủ đô Bangkok, sẽ sớm bị ảnh hưởng.

Mặc dù lũ năm nay không nguy hiểm như năm ngoái nhưng nhiều tỉnh miền bắc như Sukhothai, Ayuthaya, Phitsanulok... đang đối mặt với tình trạng lũ lụt, lũ quét nghiêm trọng.
