Denmark's Wozniacki will play world number three Azarenka of Belarus on Sunday in the coastal resort Hua Hin, with ticket revenues going to relief efforts for inundations that swamped huge areas of the country and left nearly 800 dead.
27 provinces now disaster zones
A total of 27 provinces have been declared cold spell disaster zones since the annual big chill hit the country on Nov 2, the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department reported on Friday.
The cold weather is now prevailing over 28,013 villages of 299 districts in the declared disaster zones, the department said.
The provinces are Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, Mae Hong Son, Phrae, Uttaradit, Phitsanulok, Nan, Tak, Phayao, Lampang, Lamphun, Petchabun, Sakon Nakhon, Loei, Nong Khai, Nakhon Phanom, Ubon Ratchathani, Mahasarakham, Mukdahan, Kalasin, Buri Ram, Si Sa Ket, Bueng Khan, Udon Thani, Suphanburi, Nakhon Pathom and Ratchaburi.
34 die, 501 hurt on roads Thursday
A total of 34 people were killed and 501 others injured in road accidents on Thursday, Dec 29, the first day of the “seven dangerous days” of the New Year celebration, the Road Accident Prevention and Reduction Centre reported on Friday.
The centre said there were 427 road accidents yesterday, leaving 34 people dead and 501 injured. The number of road accidents increased 8.65 per cent, the death toll by 41.67 per cent and injuries by 17.88 per cent over the same period last year.
The road accidents on the first day of seven dangerous days during New Year festivity last year were reported at 393, in which 24 people died and 425 others were injured, according to the centre.
